WHO ARE THE VENICE LIONS

We Serve!

0F9A9246.jpg

Our Venice club is part of the largest international service organization in the world. We support international efforts to save the sight of millions, provide measles vaccinations and disaster relief.

At the local community level, Lions provide free vision and hearing services to those in need, screen the vision of preschool children and collect used eyeglasses.  They also sponsor and participate in many events such as the Sharks Tooth Festival, Halloween and Holiday parades, Youth Recycle Program, Peace Poster Contest and Easter egg hunts.

Every dollar donated goes back to the community in the form of grants, scholarships, and educational and fun activities for children.

Our members like serving in a club with a purpose.  It makes us feel good to give back to our community.  We are looking for people to bring inspirations, ideas and talents to our club.  We hope you will join us at one of our meetings to see what a difference you could make as a Venice Lion!

Please call us at (941) 837-2789, email us at venicelionsclub@gmail.com or through the Contact link above for more information about our Club and to attend a meeting.

Barbara McGillicuddy

Treasurer - Administration

Lion Barbara learned about Lionism at an early age as her dad was a Lion in Bridgewater, MA. Lion Barbara has been a member of the Lions family since 1974 when she joined the Hampstead (NH) Lioness Club. She became the first Lioness District President in New England and earned five club extension awards. When Lions International dissolved the Lioness District organization she joined the Hampstead and then Portsmouth (NH) Lions Clubs and served as Treasurer of Lions Camp Pride (NH) for 4 years prior to relocating to Venice in 1994.  Upon her departure from NH the Hampstead and Portsmouth Lions Clubs joined in naming her a Melvin Jones Fellow and in 2009 the Venice Lions Club awarded her a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship.

CHRISTAL.jpeg

Christal Snell

One Year Director

Since I was a child, I have admired the Lions. For as young as I can remember their presence circled in our community. There was no mistaking their bright shiny yellow vest frolicking about at many events and happenings throughout our cities and towns in the Boston area where I was raised. Without knowing it then the Lions were much more than their colorful attire and big smiles.

On the last Sunday in October the Woburn MA Lions Club always hosts the annual Halloween Parade, an event that has taken place for 70 years. For about a decade my late husband Patrick along with a group of friends and his employees would build a float on one of his construction company trailers all decked out with Halloween décor. The company trucks would pull the float filled with friend’s kids aboard and a band playing The Monstah Mash down Main St. We would pass out thousands of pounds of candy to all the kids dressed in their costumes along the parade route, rain or shine the show went on! It was something Patrick took a lot of pride in doing and enjoyed every minute of it. We were not members of the Lions then but supported their local causes through donations to serve the community.

Six months after Patrick passed, I received a letter in the mail from The Lions Eye Foundation. Informing me that because of Patrick being an organ donor they successfully transplanted portions of his eyes to two (2) recipients that could now see. The gift of sight! Wow! This changed my world and gave me new perspective on my journey moving forward………… Feelings of, how will I get through the next day? Began to shift to, how can I serve others?

On the one-year anniversary of my husband Patrick’s passing, it was Jan 16, 2024. I called the Venice Lions Club to inquire about joining. With open arms and a smile on the other end of the line Barbara said come on in! I was invited to the next meeting and soon thereafter I became a proud member of The Venice Lions Club! Now I get to wear that bright shiny yellow vest I admired so much as a child. I get to serve alongside the most kind and giving souls that I have ever met in my life. Soon after joining I also learned my grandfather was a member of the Lions in Reading MA for over 50 years!

I am a yoga teacher now and the most powerful message that I share is: “To show up just as you are and to know that wherever you are at, is exactly where you should be.”

Thank you, Lions, thank you…….

Judy Rocquin

Tail Twister

Judy grew up in a small town in Ontario, Canada. After nursing school she and several classmates moved to New Orleans for job opportunities and fun. She met Rocky at a holiday party and they married the following year. This year will be their 44th anniversary. They have two children and two grandchildren.

Judy’s nursing career was varied and very fulfilling. After obtaining a Bachelors Degree in Nursing (she already had an Associates Degree) and a Master’s Degree in Education, Judy spent most of her nursing career teaching, coaching and facilitating organizational development. She was actively involved in The American Society for Training and Development, an international organization for training professionals in all industries.  She served as the New Orleans Chapter Club President and was the Chair of the Host Committee for the 1992 international Convention which had 10,000 attendees.

In 1995, Judy and her family moved to Aberdeen, Washington. It was there that Judy became involved in the local Lions Club.  She served on several committees and helped coordinate the Aberdeen Lions annual “Toast the Harbor” wine tasting and silent auction fundraiser.

When she retired and moved to Florida in 2015, joining the local Lions club was a priority.  She and Rocky help coordinate the float decorations and volunteer participation in the Halloween and Christmas Parades. In her role as Tail Twister, Judy is able to reconnect with her teaching roots.

Ed Stack

Lion Tamer

Ed grew up in New Orleans, LA. Following high school, he was fortunate enough to be awarded a Navy ROTC scholarship to Tulane University where he studied Chemical Engineering. After graduation and commissioning as an ensign, Ed served 6-1/2 years in the Navy, including nuclear propulsion training, 3 years on a fast attack submarine (USS RAY), and 2 years as a tactical team training instructor at the Naval Submarine School.

Ed met his future wife (Lion Jan) while his sub was visiting Groton, CT for pre-deployment training. Ed and Jan were married in January, 1980 and have two children, Christopher and Heidi. They also have four grandchildren: Ella (14), Clare (9), Max (6), and Violet (4).

.
Ed left the Navy in 1983 to begin a second career working for a defense contractor. Until his retirement in 2019, Ed applied his engineering knowledge and Navy experience to a variety of tasks, including submarine tactics development and documentation, Navy at-sea exercise planning and analysis, submarine and surface warship combat systems performance evaluations, and US Coast Guard sensor effectiveness testing. During this period, Ed also continued his education and earned Masters degrees in Business Administration and Electrical Engineering.

Upon retirement, Ed and Jan became snowbirds, spending their winters in a villa in North Port, FL and summers in a condo in West Hartford, CT near Heidi and her family. Ed became a Lion in 2023. Because he enjoys physical activities, he is quick to volunteer for any Venice Lions Club project involving manual labor. He is honored to coordinate the Venice Lions Club’s participation in the annual Venice Shark Tooth Festival, and hopes to continue serving in this role.
